Three-quarters of Americans (73 percent) say the state of moral values in the U.S. is getting worse, according to an annual poll from Gallup. One in five (20 percent) says morals are getting better.
That’s a shift from 10 years ago. In 2006, 81 percent said the state of morals was getting worse, while only 11 percent said morals were getting better.
Gallup also asked Americans to rate the morality of numerous issues.
On some issues, the nation is divided. Slightly more than half (53 percent) believe medical testing on animals and doctor assisted suicide are morally acceptable. Forty-three percent say the same about abortion.
For other issues, there is a clear consensus on what Americans believe is moral and immoral.
