Three recent stories have showcased the humanity of individuals born with Down syndrome and the positive impact they have on those around them.
Boy with Down Syndrome Named 2018 Gerber Baby
Lucas Warren of Dalton, Georgia, beat out 140,000 other entrants in Gerber’s 8th annual contest to determine this year’s “spokesbaby.”
“Lucas’ winning smile and joyful expression won our hearts this year,” Gerber President and CEO Bill Partyka said.
“Every year, we choose the baby who best exemplifies Gerber’s longstanding heritage of recognizing that every baby is a Gerber baby, and this year, Lucas is the perfect fit.”
Lucas’ mother, Cortney Warren, believes his selection can have additional benefits.
“We hope this opportunity sheds light on the special needs community,” Warren said, “and educates people that with acceptance and support, individuals with special needs have the potential to change the world—just like our Lucas!”
Model Takes Over Belfast Catwalk
Kate Grant dreamed of being a model. And after her mom’s Facebook post went viral, Grant got her chance.
She became the first model with Down syndrome to take the catwalk at Belfast Fashionweek.
The native of Cookstown, Northern Ireland, received a standing ovation as she strutted out blowing kisses and playing to the crowd.
‘Night to Shine’ Crowns Special-Needs Guests
Partnering with 375 churches in all 50 states and 11 countries, the Tim Tebow Foundation hosts prom-like “Night to Shine” events for individuals with autism, Down syndrome and other special needs.

“This is a glimpse of the kingdom,” said Chris Benjamin, a pastor at West-Ark Church of Christ, which participated in the event. “You see the upside-down kingdom in action because those often overlooked are given special honor.”
The foundation, started by the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, reported 150,000 volunteers and 75,000 guests participated in this year’s events.
