“On the Horizon” is a preview of newsworthy events coming within the next week.

A Confirmation Fight Coming to D.C.

Gina Haspel is President Trump’s pick to lead the CIA, but Senate Democrats are having none of it. Expect a fight this week for her confirmation in the Senate.

Fetal Heartbeat Bill Signed by Iowa Governor

On Friday, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed into law the most restrictive abortion ban in the nation—one that bans abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected. Since the heartbeat starts at six weeks, it’s likely that abortions in the Hawkeye State will be extremely limited since most tests or symptoms don’t indicate pregnancy until later. A court fight will likely ensue challenging the constitutionality of this bill.

Lava, Volcanoes Threaten Hawaii Residents and Churches

Seismic activity increased and thousands more Hawaiians were forced from their homes after Kilauea erupted late last week. The lava flow has now consumed a neighborhood on the Big Island, and more than 2,500 residents are under a mandatory evacuation. Churches on the eastern side of the island are working to shelter many of the evacuees.

The More You Know, the Less You Eat

Monday, May 7, is the FDA compliance deadline for chain restaurants to list calorie information on menus. In a story last month, we saw studies show that more than 75 percent of American preachers are overweight, many to the point of obesity. One even said, “Our pastors are digging their graves with their teeth.”

Mental Health Matters

Saturday marks National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. Over the past few years, mental health discussions have increased within the church, but almost always dealt with adults. Many are beginning to realize, however, that it is also something to be aware of in kids.
