Trust. Pray. Wait on the Lord.
Christian leaders say their moms have been the source of life-changing advice, and they’re grateful.
In honor of Mother’s Day, we asked a few of today’s influential Christian leaders, “What’s the greatest piece of advice your mother gave you?” Here’s what some of them said.
Kay Warren, mental health advocate: My mom always said, “Trust God in every situation.” I heard her say it when my brother was addicted to heroin and in jail. I heard her say it when she became a widow. Today, at 94 and living with Alzheimer’s, I hear her whisper the name of Jesus.
D.A. Horton, pastor and author: “Pray without ceasing, watch God move, be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading and preach God’s Word, mijo! Your ABBA Father has got you!” I’m blessed to say, I’m the product of the fervent and effective prayers of a praying momma!
Ray Ortlund, pastor and author: “Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!’” (Psalm 27:14). (This was) my mom’s counsel to me when I was going through a very hard time. Great advice!
And here are some things other Christian leaders—past and present—have written or publicly spoken about their mothers.
Billy Graham, evangelist: Of all the people I have ever known, she had the greatest influence on me. … She and my father didn’t have much education … but my mother was a woman of God.
She always had devotions with us, she always prayed with us, she always loved us, and did so many things, as I look back now, out of the way. And she and my father, when I was in Bible school, they would go up to a room upstairs and kneel down every morning at 10 o’clock to pray for their son in Bible school.
Nancy Wolgemuth, Bible teacher and author: Above all, her model has led me to reverence, honor, and joyously obey the Lord Jesus, the supreme love of my life.
I long to be attentive to Him, to serve Him, to fulfill His wishes, to be by His side, and to let others know of my deep admiration for Him. These longings were first planted in my heart from the heart of my mother.
