Chaos at the Border
Weekend news was dominated by the treatment of families at the U.S.-Mexico border—in particular, having children separated from their parents at detention centers. First Lady Melania Trump even weighed in on the issue this morning signaling an escalation of the issue. This story will continue to develop this week.
Pope Blasts Abortion
On Saturday, Pope Francis used strong language to condemn abortion, particularly aborting unborn children after prenatal testing reveals potential genetic issues.
“Last century, the whole world was scandalized by what the Nazis did to purify the race,” Pope Francis said. “Today, we do the same thing but with white gloves.”
World Cup Continues
The globe’s most-watched sporting event continues this week after an opening stretch of matches that saw defending champs Germany lose to Mexico and favorites Brazil and Argentina held to draws in their opening matches. England and Belgium, two other major favorites begin their quest for the cup early this week.
Search Teams Searching
Following last week’s Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Dallas, the only item of business still on the table is search team updates from the International Mission Board, the Executive Committee, and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. SWBTS is still yet to announce a search team to find a successor for former president Paige Patterson. That announcement is expected any day.
Smoke Signals
Today marks the beginning of a government-ordered campaign for tobacco companies in which they must post “corrective statements” on their websites and social media about the harm of cigarettes and related products. The campaigns are part of a racketeering suit settled last fall.
