“On the Horizon” is a preview of newsworthy events coming within the week.

And the Nominee Is…

President Trump is said to be choosing between Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh, Thomas Hardiman, and Raymond Kethledge as his nominee for the Supreme Court vacancy created by Anthony Kennedy’s retirement. Republicans in the Senate hope to move quickly on approving whomever Trump picks. An announcement is expected tonight.

Haiti Protests Leave Tourists, Mission Teams, Adoptive Parents Stranded

Protests and civil unrest in Haiti broke out over the weekend leaving hundreds of tourists, missions workers, and adoptive parents stranded on the Caribbean island. Airports are shut down, gas prices have surged, and those on the island wanting to get back to the U.S. or other countries have basically been told to sit and wait. Many groups aren’t expected to make it back until the end of the week.

Rescuers Down Under the Water

Evacuations began in earnest yesterday of a Thai soccer team trapped in a cave in northern Thailand for the past two weeks. As of Monday morning, eight boys have been rescued, leaving four players and a coach still stuck in the flooded cave system.

Is It Really Coming Home?

England’s 2-0 World Cup victory over Sweden on Saturday punched the Three Lions’ ticket to the semifinals against Croatia (a winner over host Russia on penalty kicks) on Wednesday. Despite being one of the two oldest national teams, England only won the World Cup once, in 1966. In the other semifinal, France and Belgium square off.

A Royal Christening

On Monday, Prince Louis of Cambridge, the newborn son of Prince William and Duchess Kate, will be baptized by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the Chapel Royal at St James’s Palace. Close friends and members of the royal family are expected to attend the ceremony for the 11-week-old baby.
